Major coach and bus operators like Great Sights, InterCity and Newmans Coachlines provide frequent daily regional services in the North and South Islands.  There are many smaller local bus and shuttle companies that offer frequent daily bus services within local or regional areas in the North and South Islands.

Travel is in modern buses and coaches with InterCity Coachlines operating a fleet of eco-friendly air-conditioned buses featuring reclining seats with foot and heat rests. InterCity buses do not have washroom facility but do stop for comfort and refreshments on route.

Great Sights and Newmans Coachlines operate premier services with a fleet of modern, luxury, eco-friendly, air-conditioned coaches featuring reclining seats with foot and head rests and onboard toilet/washroom facilities.

InterCity Coachlines operates the Starlighter overnight coach services to and from Auckland, Hamilton, Rotorua, Taupo, Palmerston North and Wellington, connecting at Wellington or Picton with Wellington/Picton ferry services crossing Cook Strait between the North and South Islands. The Starlighter overnight service features reclining seats with foot and head rests, individual reading lights and air conditioning controls, onboard toilet/washroom facility and two refreshment/comfort stops on route.

National coach and bus operators operate frequent daily bus and coach services in both the North and South Island, with some services that connect with Cook Strait ferry services that operate between Wellington in the North and Picton in the South Island.

Online ferry times, fares, passenger space availability and instant confirmation reservations are available for
Cook Strait ferry services between Wellington in the North Island and Picton in the South Island.

There is also combined bus and ferry travel fares to or from Paihia (Bay of Islands), Auckland, Hamilton, Rotorua, Taupo, Palmerston North or Wellington to or from Nelson, Blenheim, Kaikoura and Christchurch pay one fare and traveling on one ticket. These fares include bus and ferry travel between these destinations.

With
combined TranzAlpine train and scenic bus travel options and fares to choose from, you can make one reservation and travel on one fare from either Christchurch to Franz Josef or Christchurch to Franz Josef and Queenstown or from Queenstown to Franz Josef and Christchurch or Franz Josef to Christchurch.

You can book accommodation that is close to inter-regional and long distance coach terminals in Auckland, Hamilton, Paihia (Bay of Islands), Rotorua, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch and Queenstown and near Franz Josef and Fox Glacier coach/bus stops and near Christchurch Railway Station for the TranzAlpine train services to and from Christchurch.

Great Sights CoachIf you want to explore and see New Zealand's unique scenic beauty, there is a range of 'Book As You Go' flexi bus, ferry travel and sightseeing passes, where you can travel at your own pace on the InterCity Coachlines, Newmans Coachlines, Great Sights and Magic Bus national bus and coach networks that provide value for money travel.

These Bus and Ferry Passes are available in number 'travel' sectors, by the number of travel 'Hours' or choose from a range of pre-selected travel plans, allowing you to travel when you want for up to 12 months from you first travel date.  All Bus and Ferry Passes include ferry crossings between the North and South Islands.

There is a range of bed and breakfast inns and lodges, backpacker hostels, motels, motor inns, apartment and hotel accommodation that can be used with your bus/coach pass.

You can make a reservation to and from Auckland International Airport to any destination outside of the greater Auckland urban region either from the International or domestic terminals if heading southbound from Auckland.

Also, you can make reservations from Christchurch International Airport for bus and coach services to and from Christchurch to Queenstown, Tekapo, Mt Cook, Twizel, Fox Glacier, Franz Josef or Wanaka.
